Polonca Lovšin: What Women Foresters Told Me

The zine What Women Foresters Told Me spotlights women foresters, hunters, and forest owners in Slovenia and examines our relationship to the forest through the perspective of gender. It relies on research by the Slovenian Forestry Institute Fem4Forest: Forests in Women’s Hands (2020–22) which shows that female forest owners, in contrast to their male counterparts, are more likely to prioritize the ecological and social functions of their forest land over commercial interests.

What Women Foresters Told Me is based on interviews with the following five Slovenian woman foresters, hunters, and forest owners: Katarina Flajšman, Marija Jakopin, Janja Lukanc, Lucija Odar, and Veronika Valentar. It also includes statistics related to forests in general and Slovenian forests specifically, and the results of the above-mentioned research by the Slovenian Forestry Institute.

The zine was created as part of Polonca Lovšin’s solo exhibition The Forest in Women’s Hands and Mushrooms at the End of the World (November 30, 2023–January 31, 2024, gallery of the Slovenian Forestry Institute in Ljubljana).

Dušica Dražić: It Rains Differently

The zine It Rains Differently includes a script written by Dušica Dražić, Tanja Šljivar, and Mirjana Dragosavljević, and black-and-white photographs taken by Dražić’s father, Milutin, the lead forest engineer during the decade-long project of reforesting the Pešter plateau in Serbia, which took place during the 1970s and 1980s. The script includes different voices and describes in a poetic manner the genesis of the forest now growing on the Pešter plateau.

The zine was produced as part of the production of the film It Rains Differently and international volunteer reforestation of the Pešter plateau that was organized in the frame of the Forest Encounters project from August 18 to August 25, 2024.

Nayarí Castillo: Visitations

The zine Visitations gathers stories and illustrations by different authors whose contributions contain sensitive approaches to the forest. The zine was produced as part of the production of the Forest Encounters Glossary published in 2025 by Reagenz. In 2024, artist-researcher Nayarí Castillo coordinated various participatory strategies to collect contributions for the Forest Encounters Glossary. The process included contributions made by visitors to the exhibition Wild Spots at the <rotor> Centre for Contemporary Art in Graz (2024) and by participants of a series of workshops facilitated in connection with the the glossary in 2024.

Some contributions were longer, unique, varied, passionate, poetic, and non-traditional, and thus went beyond the scope of the dictionary. Visitations contains these free and experimental works, adding an extra dimension to the Forest Encounters collection of different forest imaginaries.
